Review: The Conjuring

The Conjuring (2013)
Directed by: James Wan
Staring: Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga and Ron Livingston

I am an avid fan of all things horror; I have been watching horror films since I was about 4 years old. With all the media hype around this film I honestly didn’t expect it to be as frightening as advertised, I was right.

Before the real story gets going there is a small prelude story to introduce Ed and Lorraine Warren, this part was completely pointless, yes it did the job of introducing the two characters but it could have been done it a more creative noteworthy way. The prelude revolved around a doll that seemed like it would have played a major part in the film, it didn’t, the doll was meaningless to the plot of the film. After the film actually begins it shows a new family moving into a house, and big surprise what should they find, a part of the house boarded up. If we have learned anything from haunted house films, this is where all the evil is hidden and contained. The family rips the boards down and explores the area, and sets the haunting in motion. The film is supposedly based on a true event, as was The Amityville Horror that Ed and Lorraine also investigated, nevertheless at the end it’s left open for a sequel, this tactic has always baffled me since most of the time the next tenants claim to never have any problems.

The trailers pretty much ruin any chance of you being startled at any point in this film. Slow zoom outs and sudden lack of sound made for predictable “scares”.  It was a bit choppy and jumped around but wasn’t extraordinarily distracting, although the flashbacks were never fully developed or explained. The acting was nothing amazing, I remember Lili Taylor from The haunting and her acting hasn’t improved. The music choice was done well; the songs fit the era the story took place in. Overall this film is a generic horror film, with no real plot development relying solely on cheep scare tactics, I give it 2 out 5 stars.

Sorry everyone for the late review, I’ve been extremely busy with school and planning my 10 year anniversary to NYC this weekend. Without further ado…

Drinking Buddies (2013)
Directed by: Joe Swanberg
Staring:  Anna Kendrick, Jack Johnson and Olivia Wilde

I was very excited about this film; it looked like one I would be totally wrapped up in. I love Magnolia Pictures, I feel Jake Johnson is hilarious and I adore Anna Kendrick, but none of that helped this film at all. It wasn’t a horrible film but it wasn’t very entertaining either, my husband left the room after 30 minutes.

This is set in a brewing factory with Kate as the only female employee and she is a guy’s girl, beautiful but into beer and sports. From the beginning you can see the attraction between Kate and Luke and the lack of it between Kate and Chris. You can easily see the inner fight within Luke with his attraction to Kate because he genuinely loves Jill. Out of no where, and I mean I have no clue how this happened because it literally jumped from a party clean up to this scene, the two couples are on a beach side weekend getaway together. During this time you see the couples off with the others significant other more than each other which was more awkward than anything else. Again the film throws plots out of no where, Jill informs Luke she’s going out of country for awhile and this is when you think she’s cheating on him with Chris and Luke will inevitably end up with Kate. Wrong, it’s far more boring than that, Kate sleeps with a different co-worker and Luke gets jealous and things become tense between them. After more awkward tense scenes of Luke helping Kate move Jill comes home and tells Luke of the kiss shared between her and Chris on the weekend trip awhile back. There’s no argument just a kiss to show they are ok and the scene cuts to a scene of Kate having lunch and Luke eventually joining her, summing up their friendship is mended.

The dialogue was typical of an independent film, seemingly unscripted and surface deep. The lighting didn’t help it was very drab and dim and almost felt gloomy. There is swearing but not an over abundance of it along with nudity in one scene (Olivia Wilde’s breasts). Overall I was disappointingly bored with this film and give it a 1 out of 5 stars.

The Hole (2001)
Directed by Nick Hamm.
Staring Thora Birch and Keira Knightley

In the first five minutes my hopes were high, distraught girl wondering to find a phone with blood soaked socks and a blood-curdling scream all before the opening credits rolled.
I was sadly disappointed; it became a very slow moving film, a lot of it was unnecessary to the story and felt just placed to extend the running time.
The film was choppy and not edited well, jumping from “flashbacks” to story and back again. There were 3 different versions of what happened, with the ending finally slightly coming together in a not so cleaver way.
The acting was mediocre at best and the dialogue was lacking. There was unnecessary nude scene from both male (full frontal) and female (breasts), but it was expected from a story about four sex driven teenagers looking to skip a field trip and party.
It was not what I would define as a horror film at all, no murderer, no paranormal, just a tale of what a twisted teenage girl will do for love/lust.
Do I find myself yelling I want the last 102 minutes of my life back? No, but would I watch it again? Absolutely not. Over all I would rate this film with 2 out of 5 stars.
